Cor Y Cymoedd is a mixed choir based in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. The English meaning is Choir of the Valleys.
A BRIEF HISTORY
The year 2000 was a memorable and momentous year for Ebbw Vale when the National Eisteddfod for Wales came to town. An Eisteddfod choir was formed for the event and everyone from the surrounding area, who had an interest in singing, was invited to join. The Eisteddfod organisers and many Welsh speakers from the area awaited with some trepidation to see if there would be enough local interest in joining such a choir.
Much to their amazement and delight over two hundred people turned up for the first rehearsal in October 2009 at Libanus chapel in Ebbw Vale. From then on we met every Monday evening to learn Mozart’s Requiem. We were lead by the conductor and teacher Alun Guy and accompanied by Odette Jones and Tim Hill. We successfully performed this major work at an evening concert during the Eisteddfod week in August 2010.
We all enjoyed this experience immensely and many in the choir wanted to continue with our music making and that’s just what we did. Fifty five members of the Eisteddfod choir met in the Beaufort Male Choir rehearsal room in October 2010 and formed Cor y Cymoedd (Choir of the Valleys), with Odette Jones as our conductor and Tim Hill as accompanist. We are an independent and self funded organisation.
Since then Cor y Cymoedd has performed music of different genres and in many venues across the Heads of the Valleys communities. Our aim is to keep alive aspects of Welsh and many other choral traditions and to provide an opportunity for men and women of all ages and abilities to enjoy singing and performing in a mixed voice choir. We are very grateful to the musical directors and accompanists who have kept the choir going since it’s conception, nearly ten years ago viz: namely Odette Jones, Tim Hill , David Davies and Judith Pendrous, who is still our main accompanist.
We are delighted and privileged to have Gareth Morris as our current Musical Director. Gareth is a music teacher and singer with the WNO who is keen to grow the choir and to perform challenging and exciting musical works. We currently have about 40 members covering all four (SATB) voice parts. Our doors are always open to potential new members who are welcome to join us.
